John Mashey received his PhD in Computer Science from Penn State, which gave him the first Outstanding Engineering Alumnus Award for Computer Science in 1997. He contributed to Unix software development at Bell Telephone Laboratories, the research and development arm of AT&T. At Convergent Technologies he directed software development for minicomputers. At MIPS Computer Systems, he worked on RISC architecture and systems designs. He then was a chief scientist at Silicon Graphics. The USENIX Association gave him the 2012 “Flame” Lifetime Achievement Award. He cofounded SPEC, helped with the Hot Chips Conference for many years, and has been a Trustee of the Computer History Museum since 2001. He is a member of ACM and IEEE Computer Society.

Angela Hey received her PhD in Management Science at Imperial College, then part of the University of London. She also has mathematics degrees – MMath from the University of Waterloo and MA from the University of Cambridge. She started her career at Bell Laboratories, working on operations and strategic planning for computer systems in telephone companies. She then set up a Californian venture to publish enterprise software with AT&T and Digital Research. She has worked in General Magic, a mobile device startup, and Palantir, a character recognition startup. As an industry analyst at INPUT she developed forecasts and reports for enterprise software. She has contributed technology articles for the Mountain View Voice. Her clients have included major corporations, startups, venture capitalists and nonprofits.
